Description
Greystoke Mahale is an outstanding camp that has sensational natural surroundings. Located on the pristine white sandy shores of Lake Tanganyika and with a backdrop of forested slopes provided by the 8000 feet Mahale Mountains rising behind, Greystoke Mahale is as unique as its setting whilst remaining sympathetic to the landscape.
Accommodation
The rooms are tucked away just into the forest with only the main mess structure located on the beach. The lodge is made almost entirely from local sustainable materials. Buildings are made from reclaimed wood sourced from wrecked or retired dhows and bought from the local villagers. For the roofs, old fisherman’s canoes are used as ladders and thatch from palm trees gathered outside the national park create the cover.
Chimpanzees
The Mahale Mountains are host to one of the largest populations of wild chimpanzees remaining in the wild. Of all the wildlife that surrounds Greystoke Mahale, it is often the chimps that are the most fascinating. It is hard not to compare their daily lives, their movements, feeding, squabbling foraging and grooming, with our own.
It is true that chimpanzees are the main event but there is so much on offer at Greystoke Mahale including amazing birdlife, nine species of primate, bush backs, bush pigs, fishing, kayaking, waterfalls, deep water swimming and more.
Our Opinion
Greystoke Mahale is totally unique and one of the most amazing spots in the whole of Tanzania. Watching the chimps is a spellbinding experience that you will never forget. The terrain is fairly unforgiving at times so not for the weak-hearted and the location is remote – Mahale is not that easy to get to, but then the best places usually aren’t!
