Shooting Star is a lovely, authentic and traditional beach resort on the North-East coast of Zanzibar.  They now have around 20 rooms in total, all thatched and low rise, scattered around on a hillside overlooking the sea.  This resort is a nature lovers paradise, the grounds are lush and mature, with a very tropical feel.

The resort has a large thatched restaurant that overlooks the sea, you dine with sand under your feet and low light in the evenings.  The food is very good and you have a la carte meals.  There is a bar area in the restaurant, and also down on the beach they have a thatched bar just above the sand.  The beach is huge here, with white sand and palm trees, you can walk for miles along the beach without a break.

Accommodation
Shooting Star Lodge has 20 rooms set over several traditional style bungalows and more recently added luxury villas. All rooms have high beamed ceilings, large windows and are furnished with hand crafted wooden beds.

Sea View Rooms
All sea view rooms are large and well appointed with en-suite bathrooms, mosquito nets and air conditioning.

Four of the Sea View Cottages are set out on two levels and are ideal for families: the ground floor has a large air-conditioned double bedroom, shower room and separate closet, and a staircase leads up to a twin children’s room in the roof space, whilst there is a separate wash basin area on the upper level, the shower and toilet are shared with the ground floor. The upper level has ceiling and table fans only.

Lodge Rooms
The lodge rooms are garden facing, smaller, more simply furnished and also have air-conditioning.

Monsoon Villas

The ground floor is a large living room, then the second floor is the master bedroom with ensuite.  Both of these rooms are furnished so well, scattered with antiques and Zanzibar made furniture.  They are also both Air Conditioned.  You have a huge amount of space inside the villa, but then you keep going up and you have the most fantastic roof terrace to enjoy.  Up here you have a large day bed and also a huge bathtub.  The views are 360 degrees and we think some of the best on the island.

It does not stop there.  Outside you have your own private swimming pool (yes it is just about big enough to swim in) and a sunbathing area.  This is totally private, you cannot be seen in your pool except from your own roof terrace. You also have a private walkway to the beach from your villa.

Facilities
The restaurant at Shooting Star Lodge is open air and offers stunning views out over the ocean.

The Zanzibari chef has a long established reputation for fine seafood and even gets a mention in the Lonely Planet Guide.

Caters well for vegetarians.

The Shooting Star lodge also has an infinity pool set up above sea level offering a fabulous vantage point to look out over the coastline with a cool drink.

Other Activities
Shooting Star Lodge is well located for exploring Kiwengwa, the local village, on foot or by bicycle. Each morning you can to watch the local women heading out to harvest seaweed as the fishermen return with their catch. This is about as busy as village life gets. Kiwengwa also provides opportunities to shop for trinkets, carvings and brightly coloured, wrap-around cotton sarongs or “kangas” at the local bazaar.

Our Opinion on Shooting Star Lodge
This is a well managed and popular guest house in a good location. We really like the suites with the pool on the roof and the service food and hospitality is of a high standard.
