The Residence Zanzibar is currently the only member of “The Leading Hotels of the World” in Tanzania and is a luxurious and sophisticated tribute to the island’s African, Omani and European heritage.

The resort is rather like a village, covering 80 acres and surrounded by palm tree forests and banana plantations. The Residence has its own private beach which stretches for a mile and has its own jetty for boat trips and water sports. The gardens are beautifully designed and maintained and are worth exploring on foot, or by bicycles which are provided free of charge to all guests. Villas at The Residence
Each villa features satellite TV, CD/DVD player in the living room, ipod dock, mini bar, direct dial telephone, hairdryer, mosquito nets, personal safe, tea and coffee making facilities, broadband internet access, air-conditioning and overhead fans in the living room and bedrooms. En-suite facilities include separate bathroom, shower and toilet with bidet.

The deck outside is spacious, comes with wicker chairs, day beds and overlooks a private swimming pool (30 – 35 m2 and 1.2m deep) so you can spend most of your time in and around your villa if you wish.

The Residence has: 45 One Bedroom villas, 11 Junior Suite Villas, 7 Two Bedroom Villas, and 1 Presidential Villa.

Environment and Local Community

The Residence has a water recycling and energy conservation program with heat recovered from the air-conditioning units providing hot water for the villas. They also use a wide variety of recycled items throughout the resort and in order to be as self sufficient as possible, the resort has is own fruit and vegetable plantations on site. The Residence participates in a variety of community projects and has built a school for the local village.

Our Opinion on The Residence Zanzibar

From the minute you arrive at The Residence you know you’re going to be very well looked after.
The Villas are spacious and very well equipped, probably the most elegantly finished and furnished that we have experienced on Zanzibar. This is a slick and professional operation and one of the few true European 5 star standard hotels on the island.

If you are looking for elegant luxury in a quiet and beautiful location then this is the place for you. The beach is good but doesn’t boast the coral white sand of the East Coast but on balance doesn’t suffer from the same tidal variations.

Be aware that extras like drinks and food that aren’t included can be quite expensive and can add up during a long stay if you’re not careful, but this is to be expected with such fine dining and service on offer.

This place is perfect for honeymoon couples and families alike looking for a luxurious and elegant beach resort that delivers a very high standard of service and dining.
